Light Sculpting
Light Sculpting Photography is the Art Form of using handheld lights to shape, paint or draw in a scene while the shutter of a camera is left open during a long exposure photograph. By shooting in a dark location and using photographic technique of long exposure photography (in our case, this was mostly 10 seconds of exposure time) the flashes, streaks, colors, textures, and trails of light created by the light sculpting tools and modifiers are captured in the photograph without the use of any post production. To add an extra dimension, we (mostly) added a short flash at the end of the exposure. Because of this, the light sculpting artist is visible in the frame as well.
Colored shadows – Not all shadows are black
A white wall is illuminated by a red, a green and blue LED light source, all shining from a different point. The white wall still looks white but every object placed in between the wall and the light sources generates nicely colourful shadows. For the small ones, a nice surprise and an occasion to do a coloured shadow dance. For the older ones, the perfect occasion to explain about the difference between additive and subtractive colour mixing.
For the setup only material available in the Caeleste test laboratories has been used.
Look through paper and read the hidden message
We also presented a live demo of one of our developed sensors. The concept of the demo is that our camera has the ability to look trough paper and read a hidden message underneath. What actually happens is that we perform PRNU correction on the image of the paper. Our sensor has HDR capabilities and even the slight variations in the scene after this correction would then show up on the image. Once a hidden message was placed under the paper it would show up on the display, thus giving the impression that our sensor can read through paper.
A Family Day to remember!

– Free information event about replacements for obsolete ILX sensors
Location: 2018/06/27 in Cologne, Maritim Hotel Köln, Heumarkt 20, 10 AM – 5 PM
On the 27th of June 2018 we organize a free information event about CCD linear sensors in Cologne. First, we talk about the comparison of data sheet specifications from different manufacturers. Afterwards, in cooperation with our partner Caeleste, we present possible replacement solutions for the discontinued Sony linear sensors of the ILX series.
When selecting optical sensors for a special application, technical specifications of different sensors have to be compared. Unfortunately, the information in sensor data sheets are often not direct comparable because the manufacturers use different measuring methods and parameters. Even seemingly unambiguous information, such as the spectral sensitivity, lead regularly to misinterpretations, as many manufacturers do not specify the used units and choose them in a way that the curves appear optimal. A direct comparison is thus not possible.
This seminar is first about to find a universally valid and comparable parameter set for the description of the properties of image sensors.
Subsequently, it is shown as an example, how to extract or estimate these parameters from data sheets. For cases where image systems already exist, a simple method for measuring essential parameters is explained.
In addition to this general information we will discuss the universally valid parameters for some of the obsolete line sensors of the ILX series by Sony and the possibilities of a replacement.
Free seminar but since the number of attendees is limited, please register as soon as possible via info@eureca.de. Your registration is only complete, when you receive a confirmation E-mail and the invoice is paid.
Caeleste at the Sound of Science on May 27th
On Sunday May 27th Caeleste participated in the first edition of “Sound of Science”, a STEM promotion event. We brought two demos to the event and both attracted a lot of attention from the public. Our Wireless Personal Radiation Detection device (WPRD) was developed as part of a Eurostars project together with our Korean partner FC Unwired. The device can demonstrate the natural radiation of e.g. …. bananas! We also demonstrated our capability to read through closed envelopes. This demo was particularly enjoyed by our younger visitors!
Of course we also promoted the 2018 edition of the Electroniad and held a mini-quiz at our booth. It triggered a lot of interest and many people tested their technical skills and knowledge in this unusual setting. www.electroniad.org
The Caeleste team had a fun day at the Sound of Science and our visitors too!
The winning team of Caeleste’s 2018 Foosball Competition
In general, “foosball” (table football) is mainly a sport that people play for fun in a smoky bar, but we play it at the office!
The game still doesn’t even have a single set of rules – or one name. You’ve got langirt in Turkey, sjotterkas in Belgium, jouer au baby-foot in France, csocso in Hungary, cadureguel-schulchan in Israel, plain old table football in the UK, and a world encyclopedia of ridiculous names elsewhere around the globe. The American “foosball” (where a player is called a “fooser”) borrowed its name from the German “fußball” (Read more: “The murky history of Foosball”)
Congratulations to our ‘foosers’ who won the 2018 Caeleste Foosball Competition!
